Details
Arikady Fort, also known as Kumbla Fort, is one of the lesser-known yet historically significant forts in Kasaragod district, Kerala. Located in Arikady village near Kumbla town, the fort stands on a laterite hillock between the Kumbla River and Shiriya River, offering visitors a glimpse into the rich military and cultural history of North Kerala. Though much of the fort now survives in ruins, it remains an important heritage site that reflects the region's strategic importance during the rule of various South Indian dynasties.
Historical records indicate that the fort was built around 1608 by Ikkeri Hiriya Venkadappa Nayak of the Keladi Nayaka dynasty, which controlled large parts of coastal Karnataka and northern Kerala. Over the centuries, the fort came under the influence of the Kumbla Kingdom, Mysore rulers including Tipu Sultan, and eventually the British administration. Its strategic location overlooking important trade routes and waterways made it a valuable military outpost in the region.
Although only remnants of the original structure remain today, Arikady Fort continues to attract history enthusiasts, archaeologists, photographers, and travelers interested in exploring Kerala's lesser-known heritage sites. Archaeological excavations conducted by the University of Kerala uncovered a large hall, pottery, roof tiles, Chinese ceramics, lead bullets, and molds used for manufacturing ammunition, highlighting the fort's historical importance and active role in regional defense systems.
The elevated location of the fort provides scenic views of the surrounding countryside, rivers, and nearby villages. Visitors can walk through the ruins, observe the ancient laterite construction, and appreciate the peaceful natural surroundings. A Hanuman Temple located below the fort adds cultural and spiritual significance to the site. The tranquil atmosphere makes it an attractive destination for visitors seeking historical exploration away from crowded tourist locations.
Arikady Fort is situated close to several important tourist attractions including Kumbla Beach, Ananthapura Lake Temple, Bekal Fort, Bekal Beach, Malik Ibn Dinar Mosque, Maipady Palace, and Chandragiri Fort. The fort can easily be included in a heritage tourism itinerary covering the northern part of Kasaragod district.
The nearest town to Arikady Fort is Kumbla, located approximately 1 kilometer away. The nearest city is Kasaragod, about 12 kilometers from the fort. The nearest railway station is Kumbla Railway Station, situated around 2 kilometers away. The nearest airport is Mangalore International Airport, approximately 35 kilometers from the fort, making the destination accessible for both domestic and international visitors.
